Chinchilla

The chinchilla at the Science Center is chinchillanamed Chinchi. He is very cute and very soft.

Scientific name: Chinchilla chinchilla or Chinchilla lanigera.

Habitat: Chinchillas are rodents that are native to the Andes mountains in South America.

Diet: In captivity, chinchillas eat rabbit pellets, hay and raisins. In the wild, Chincilla’s eat: plant leaves, fruits, seeds, and small insects.

Life Cycle: Chincillas can live between 10-15 years.

Activity: Chinchillas are crepuscular. This means they are active at twilight or just before dawn.

Other Interesting Facts:
  • Chinchillas like taking dust baths, which is a special kind of bath where they roll around in dust made from pumice.
  • Chinchillas make high-pitched noises. They are soft and easy to hold.
  • Chinchillas are bred as pets and for their fur.
  • Chinchillas can be found in a variety of colors. The only color found in nature is standard gray. The most common other colors are white, black velvet, beige, ebony, violet, and sapphire, and blends of these.
