Welcome to the Pollard CSL Page!

CSL Project Overview

Over the next few months, all eighth graders will participate in a Community Service Learning (CSL) project to help them become active, responsible citizens, knowledgeable about social issues, and concerned about the world around them. Student will focus their service on helping to "make a positive difference" in our world. They will follow a number of structured steps to help them complete their CSL projects. They consider their own values and priorities and select an area for service work based on this. Students perform at least six hours of service to an organization or project related to their interests. They learn and think "deeply" about a pre-selected social issue,  and,  at the end of the project,  reflect on their learning, personal growth, and ways they have contributed to the betterment of society.

CSL Project Process (Proposed Steps)

Brainstorming What justice issues are facing our community, state, nation and world?

Deep learning about your social issue and your organization Learn more about your social issue by researching and  reading articles.

Organizations research and selection/submit proposal Go to the Organizations Manual link to learn about different service organizations so you can make an informed choice for your own community service learning. If you have an idea for an independent project instead, please submit a proposal to your CSL teacher. Present project proposal to the CSL teacher in your cluster by the assigned date.

Make and implement your action plan Develop a plan for your community service by contacting your organization. Be sure to reflect and write about your experiences after each visit. If the organization permits, take and share pictures to document your work. Use the timesheet to keep track of your work and have your supervisor sign it. Although the expectation is at least six hours of total service, hopefully you will find your service work so rewarding that you choose to do more. If you do more, keep track of this time too!

Final Self Reflection Presentation on your CSL project The final piece of this project is an electronic presentation through which you demonstrate your learning and accomplishments. This will bring together all the components of this experience in terms of what you've learned. Be sure to include reflections on: your experience, your research, and the service performed.
