Grades 1,2, and 3 have a year-long STEAM experience. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. It is not a program but a philosophical approach to learning that integrates knowledge from various disciplines. The STEAM experience in Needham is divided into four 9-week segments with each focusing on a different aspect of how these various disciplines are interconnected.

The Science Center supports the Engineering component of STEAM.

In the Engineering component of STEAM, students will be engaged in project-based engineering activities that integrate with the existing science curriculum.

Grade 1: Introduction to mechanical engineering. Students are engaged in an engineering design challenge focused on designing windmills.

Grade 2: Learn about various fields of engineering while listening to the sounds of different materials. Design a musical instrument.

Grade 3: Work to solve an earthquake engineering design challenge using shake tables and building units.
