As antacid companies rarely give explanation for how an antacid works, this experiment researched the process which an antacid begins in ones stomach. As an antacid is essentially a base, it dissolves in the stomach's hydrochloric acid and works to neutralize the excess acid which causes indigestion and pain. Following the Bronsted-Lowery concept of acids and bases, the base antacid successfully neutralize much of the acid in ones stomach.

The experiment also tested four brands of common antacids to discover which worked best and neutralized the most acid in the stomach. Through titrations with phenalthaline indicator, the experiment tested TUMS, CVS liquid, CVS tablets, and Maalox. From the results of the experiment, it was determined that in a regulated environment, the CVS liquid antacid neutralized the greatest amount of antacid.
