Solar cells (also known as photovoltaic cells) have made many promises to the realm of modern energy. Scientists say that harnessing only one-quarter of the suns energy that falls on earth could meet all current global energy requirements. However, for decades, scientists have pursued these solar cells and have still not come up with an efficient method to give solar energy a leading role in the United States energy plans. However, in recent years, environmental pollution, increasing energy demands, and mounting costs of fuels have sparked a new wave of dedicated research in the field of solar energy. This research project investigates the chemistry behind solar cells, explores how they work, and examines the advantages and disadvantages of using solar energy. With time it appears that solar cells will one day become more reliable and be given a large share of the market that supporters once hoped they would.
