Water and pH

Jimmy and Megan

For our project we decided to study and test different sources of water. We wanted to figure out if the sources of water were different from each other based on their pH levels, and if so why. For our experiment we collected water samples from the tap water of surrounding towns, rain water, spring water, and distilled water (control). We averaged the pH's of the tap water from the surrounding towns (Newton, Wellseley, Needham, Dover, and Dedham), and took the pH's of the other three water samples.

We then did some research to find out why our results came out the way they did. We had a meeting with someone in the Needham Water Department, and he told us a lot about how the pumping station for the town controls the pH of the town's water supply and he gave us the resoning behind everything they do to the water. He also gave us the web address of the Massachusetts Water Department and we learned more about the tap water in other towns.

In revieving our results our thesis was proven wrong. The rain water, which we predicted to be significantly acidic, tested very close to neutral. We learned a greatdeal about the water we drink and about what happens to it before we drink it.
