The purpose of the project is to compare the purity of drinking water from different sources. To do so, samples of Needham and Newton tap water, and Poland Springs bottled water were taken. Using various indicators the samples were tested for minerals and contents including nitrates, carbonates, magnesium, calcium and pH. Then, each sample was filtered through a Brita filter. All observations and results were recorded.
Based on the results of the tests taken in this experiment, raw and filtered water from the MWRA Quabbin, the Needham wells, and the Poland Springs are equally safe and healthy to drink. All samples meet the regulations set up by the official organizations such as the Board of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency or the Food and Drug Administration.
By studying the data of the experiment one can conclude that it is not necessary to spend a lot of extra money on filters or bottled water when living in Needham or Newton because the tap water is regularly tested and treated. However, public water is not always safe to drink especially in less sanitary or modernized systems. One must still remember some harmful factors that may contaminate water including pesticides, parasites, and lead.
