At the elementary level, the wellness program focuses on building a strong foundation for lifelong health. Students develop fundamental movement skills, learn how to work with others, and begin to understand how movement and healthy choices support overall well-being. Instruction is developmentally appropriate, inclusive, and designed to build confidence and enjoyment (Massachusetts Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Framework, 2023).
Elementary Physical Education emphasizes skill development through games, dance, gymnastics, and fitness activities (SHAPE America Standard 1). Students practice teamwork, cooperation, and respect while learning to apply rules and movement concepts (SHAPE America Standards 4 and 5). Lessons are designed to help students enjoy movement and feel successful, supporting motivation for lifelong physical activity (SHAPE America Standard 6).
Health Education is introduced formally in Grade 5 through a growth and development unit. Instruction covers physical, emotional, and social changes during puberty, personal hygiene and self-care, respect for boundaries and privacy, and decision-making skills in a safe and supportive environment (Massachusetts Health Education Standards).
