Dear Neighbors, Friends, and Families:

The 2021-2022 school year included both monumental challenges and continual transitions. In spite of the ongoing pandemic, our students, teachers, and staff continued to work towards the vision outlined in the district's Portrait of A Needham Graduate strategic plan. We made progress on the action steps necessary to assist each student in developing the skills and competencies needed for their future and to understand their role in an equitable and socially and racially just community.

A healthy and safe school environment for all of our students and staff remained the priority. We put in place the policies, programs, and protocols necessary to keep schools open for learning. We rolled out our first year of in-person full day kindergarten, expanded the formal Racial Literacy curriculum at the elementary level and the Data Science electives at Pollard. We formed a Mental Health Task Force and drafted an initial District Mental Health Plan. We made progress on an elementary level Multi-Tiered System of Support for students to receive interventions in literacy, math, and social-emotional learning. We piloted a new elementary Illustrative Math program and administered the comprehensive STAMP (standards-based measurement of proficiency) in world language skills. We also moved forward with the School Facilities Master Plan and secured design and construction funds for the historic renovation of the Emery Grover Administration and Operations Building. Details on the progress in each of these areas, and more, can be found in the pages of this Performance Report. Your questions and suggestions on the district's plans and key accomplishments are always welcome.

Particular challenges lie ahead due to increased student needs, especially for our most vulnerable students. With a deep commitment, the district continues to refine our focus on equity, inclusion, and antiracism as we optimize the actions for implementation of the Portrait strategic priorities. We are grateful to our families and the Needham community including the Joint Health and Safety Committee, the Select Board, the Town Manager, the Board of Health, the Finance Committee, and Town Meeting for their engagement, contributions, and partnership throughout the year.

Thank you all for your ongoing support of the Needham Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Matthew Spengler. Chair, School Committee

Daniel E. Gutekanst, Superintendent of Schools
