About Us

The Needham Fine & Performing Arts Department is a K-12 department comprised of over 50 certified teachers, private instructors and accompanists. Our department’s Vision and Mission is to ensure that all students who graduate from the Needham Public Schools develop skills in, and understanding of Creating, Responding, and Performing, in and through Music, Visual Arts, and/or Theater. Below is an overview of the courses and activities we offer in each discipline.

MUSIC

Elementary Schools
General Music in Grades 1-5
Chorus - Grades 4 and 5
Strings - Grades 3,4 and 5 (before school)
Band – Grades 4 and 5 (before school)

Middle School -Grades 6- 8
Full Year Classes: Chorus, Band, and String Ensemble
Trimester Classes: Music Explorations 7, Theater Music 8
Auditioned Ensembles: Jazz Ensemble, Town Orchestra, Treble Choir, Wind Ensemble

High School
Full Year Courses: Chorus, Chorale*, Women's Chorus, Concert Band, Symphonic Band*,
String Orchestra , Jazz Ensemble* (*Students selected by audition)
Semester Courses: Music Theory I and II (AP), Jazz Improvisation,
World Music, Music by Computer I and II
Co-Curricular Music Activities: MICCA Large Ensemble Concert Festivals, Massachusetts Music Educators Eastern District and All-State, All-Eastern, ACDA Honors Choirs, Jazz Band Competitions (Mass. Association of Jazz Educators), Solo-Ensemble.

District Wide Music Programs
Private instruction on all instruments and voice is available for students in grades
4-12 with Department approved instructors. There is a weekly fee for this instruction.
Honors Band: select group (by audition) for grade 5
Honors Chorus: select group (by audition) for grade 5
Needham Elementary String Orchestra (NESO): select group by audition for grade 4
Town Orchestra: select group (by audition) for grade 4-8

THEATER

Middle School - Grades 6-8
Trimester Courses: Theater Musical Arts 8
Co-curricular: Middle School Musical, Middle School Play

High School
Semester Courses: Theater Arts 1, Theater Arts II, Technical Theater
Co-Curricular: High School Musical, Theater Arts Society, Spring Play
